Food drives are very popular around the holidays. But did you know that food donations tend to slow down right about the same time need increases? When school is out for the summer, many families need additional food to get through the month, since they cannot rely on free school lunches during the day. Many kids attend summer programs, but those programs don’t necessarily offer a snack or meal, and may not last the whole summer. In other cases, grandparents are watching their grandchildren while the parents work and can’t afford the extra food. Last year, June through September were the busiest months for LSS’ Community Food Pantry! You can help us get ready for this summer by organizing a food drive--like our partner, Florida Blue! In a few weeks, Florida Blue will be encouraging its employees to "Purge the Pantry" as they go about their spring cleaning--and then bring those items in for a company food drive they'll be hosting for LSS! Want to get involved? Consider having your family, church, office or community group host a food drive too! You can even make a team-building exercise or friendly competition between departments or floors out of it. It’s a fun project for everyone, and it will help us to keep the pantry stocked and working families fed this summer. We can loan you collection barrels and print signs for you, and we'll pick up the food! If you are interested, please call (904) 521-2252 or email jason.clark@lssjax.org for more information.
