Feeding Neighbors, Fueling Hope: Becky's Volunteer Journey

Updated: Apr 23

Becky has been a dedicated volunteer at the Lutheran Social Services (LSS) Food Pantry since 2021, where she packs groceries and spreads kindness to food-insecure neighbors in need. Her journey with LSS began when the neighborhood prayer group she was a part of announced that they would give back to those in need and called others to volunteer with them. Becky stated that her prayer group chose to volunteer at LSS because of the wraparound services that support struggling local residents in various aspects of life.

Becky was amazed by the wide range of services available through LSS—from HIV services and Representative Payee Services to Refugee Resettlement and free Career and Financial Coaching. When it came to the LSS Food Pantry, she quickly realized this operation differed from others she had volunteered with. The LSS Food Pantry is one of the most accessible in Jacksonville, open Monday through Friday from 10 AM to 2 PM, allowing working families and individuals to get the help they need without facing additional barriers.

As a professor at Florida State College at Jacksonville for more than a decade, Becky brings her academic background in social psychology and her compassionate heart to every volunteer shift. What began as a one-time charity initiative that the neighborhood prayer group became a personal mission for Becky. She became a regular volunteer at LSS, visiting the pantry twice a week when she's not teaching. Becky has volunteered with various local organizations over the years and is no stranger to giving back, but  LSS has captured her heart like no other had before.

"The welcoming environment and the wide array of services here provided drive me to volunteer here frequently," she shared. "You can truly see the difference you're making." One of the most meaningful aspects of her time at the pantry is witnessing how simple gestures can brighten someone's day. She recalled how a pantry visitor smiled tearfully as LSS handed her a box of donated pastries for her birthday alongside her emergency groceries. "It's the small moments like those that remind me why I'm here. That smile can change someone's entire day, maybe even their week—and I get to be a part of that."

The LSS Food Pantry often serves as the introduction to volunteerism for many, sparking a chain reaction of community engagement for those who have never stepped up before to make a change. During her time at LSS, Becky has observed LSS's impact on other volunteers. Whether helping people comprehend the realities of food insecurity in the community or watching new volunteers find joy and purpose in giving back to those in need, she takes pride in being part of a mission that touches the lives of so many.

An inspiring instance of this that Becky witnessed is Elise’s story; The community and services she found at the LSS helped to grow her confidence and ambition outside of her time at the pantry. Since that summer, Elise has returned as frequently as her school schedule allows to volunteer with LSS to serve those in need.

Becky advises anyone looking to make a difference to get involved. “The easiest and most fulfilling way to support a mission like this is to volunteer your time."

The LSS Food Pantry always needs helping hands—and friendly faces like Becky's. Whether you're seeking a one-time opportunity or a regular volunteer role, there's a place for you here.

Becky is making a difference by volunteering today. Will you help her uplift those in need and give back by volunteering tomorrow?
