Mandarin Rotary Club's Donation Supports Ukrainian Family's Fresh Start with LSS

Mandarin Rotary Club members presented $4,000 donation on September at Lutheran Social Services of Northeast Florida (LSS) to support a Ukrainian family of seven.

The Bensieitov family are refugees fleeing from the war in Ukraine. The family is in the United States on a Ukrainian Parole Program Vista, which allows the adult family members to work.

About the Matching Grant Program

Launched in December 2022, the Matching Grant Program at LSS is an alternative to public cash assistance. The program is part of a partnership with Lutheran Immigration and Refugee Service (LIRS), the largest faith-based national nonprofit dedicated to immigration and refugee services.

The goal of the LSS Matching Grant program is to empower refugees to attain economic self-sufficiency within the short span of eight months from their enrollment. To achieve this goal, LSS staff work with families to a support system that includes English classes, job readiness workshops, financial literacy workshops.

In addition, LSS staff Grant help families create a budget tailored to their needs and facilitate job placements for those who are ready to work.

How does Matching Grant Work?

LSS is tasked with securing a "matching grant" for every individual enrolled in the program. This grant can be met through either in-kind donations or monetary contributions from compassionate organizations like the Mandarin Rotary Club.

These generous donations play a pivotal role in helping refugee families as they embark on their journey towards self-sufficiency with the support of LSS.
