JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (Oct. 10, 2008) - The Third Annual Tin Man Competition added a new twist to its successful format in 2008 - installing a Tin Kid classification. The result was a rousing success, with the event attracting its most participants ever with a total of 60 when it was held on Sunday, Oct. 5, at Shepherd of the Woods Lutheran Church's Lakeshore Property.
More than 50 volunteers were on hand as well, helping to raise more than $2,500 for the Lutheran Social Services Refugee & Immigration Services. The event increased its participation by more than 33 percent this year with 15 more competitors. The competition includes a 1-mile run, a 2.5-mike bike ride and a 50-yard swim. The Tin Kid competition is geared more toward "fun" activities, said Kay Sievert, one of the Shepherd of the Woods organizers. "We tried to make the event more than just a challenge this year, and make it a lot of fun for everyone involved," Sievert said. "We raised more money than we did last year, and our hope is that it will continue growing in the years to come." Competitors are broken into age groups for men and women (12-14, 15-19, 20-34, 35-49 and 50+), as well as categories for Family Relay and Coed.
