Lutheran Social Services of Northeast Florida invites you to join us in our mission: “Motivated and guided by the compassion of Christ, we serve and care for people in need.

You are vital to us. What you do for us this year will help us meet the needs of thousands of people in our community, regardless of faith. We help the community in the following ways:

SECOND HARVEST FOOD BANK: Distribute recovered food through our food network to 400 member agencies in 17 Northeast Florida counties, which in turn serve thousands of hungry people, mostly the working poor; give food to low-income children through the Kids Cafe after-school program and their families through the Weekend Meals program; distribute food and water to disaster victims; and help staff the State’s Emergency Operations Center (EOC).

REFUGEE & IMMIGRATION SERVICES: Resettle refugees sent to us from the State Department because their lives were at risk in their homelands due to religious or political persecution, by finding them places to live, helping them adapt to their new culture, enrolling their children in school, and helping them train for and find jobs.

ACE PROGRAM: Provide HIV/AIDS prevention education to the community and help people who are HIV-positive or living with AIDS by helping them find the services they need to stay healthy as long as possible.

REPRESENTATIVE PAYEE PROGRAM: Manage finances for 1,000 people who suffer from chronic mental illness and/or substance abuse or who are too young or too old to make sound spending decisions to ensure that their basic living needs are met.

HURRICANE DISASTER RELIEF: Following Hurricane Katrina, LSS volunteered to work with the City of Jacksonville and United Way of Northeast Florida as one of five lead agencies to assist in hurricane disaster relief in the areas of food/clothing and resettlement services until United Way hurricane-designated funding was depleted at the end of 2005. Since then, LSS continues to provide direct aid to evacuees from funding and donations of clothing, furniture, and household goods provided by local businesses and faith organizations and national Lutheran organizations.

Your support helps us add new programs to help more people, in addition to continuing the much-needed services we already provide. We are researching our ability to start an INTERNATIONAL ADOPTION PROGRAM. We hope to join other Lutheran agencies offering adoption through the Lutheran Adoption Network (LAN), a national collaboration of Lutheran adoption agencies with the combined experience of centuries. LAN agencies offer adoption services to all people regardless of faith. Your contribution to LSS will provide us much-needed start-up funds for this program. We are also continuing to study how we can most effectively help our Lutheran congregations provide meaningful programs and services for seniors. Working with Church Resources’ SENIOR MINISTRY inventory program, congregations will be developing profiles of their seniors’ needs and interests. Your support will enable us to expand existing services and add programs as necessary to help congregations minister to their seniors — benefiting seniors in the broader Northeast Florida community as well!
