Neighborhood Mobile Pantry & Health Fair
Sponsored by Thrivent For Lutherans

Close to 1100 families came out to Clanzel T. Brown Park on Saturday, March 4th to pick-up a 32 pound box filled with groceries. Lutheran Social Services’ Second Harvest Food Bank hosted its largest “Food for Families” Mobile Pantry distributing over 75,000 pounds of food. Thrivent for Lutherans was the event sponsor for this program. Special Guests included: Councilwoman Gwen Yates, City Council Representative District 8, Michael Edwards, Director of Homeland Security and Investigations, Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office and Jon Wuggazer, Director of Communications, Jacksonville First Coast Chapter of Thrivent Financial for Lutherans.

Volunteers from Mayport and Cecil Field Naval Stations assisted in set up. And 400 young people and their adult leaders participated in assembly and distribution of Family Boxes as apart of their Servant Event during the Senior High Youth Gathering of the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod’s Florida- Georgia District.

Contents of the Family Boxes were designed to supplement what may already be in clients’ kitchens as well as provide complete meals for a family of four. Local neighborhood churches and ACOSTA Sales and Marketing sponsored food drives to support this event.

In addition to food, Shands Jacksonville, Sickle Cell Association, Duval County Health Department, Prostate Cancer Awareness, Mobile HIV Van, Brain Injury Association of Florida, House Call Home Health and Optimum Health and Well Being Inc. were onsite to provide various health screenings to local residents.

The officers from the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office played an instrumental role in the day’s event. Aside from crowd control, they organized and directed the steady flow of traffic in and out of the park.
